High 6
YES, we made it! Well more like Kona made it…6th round of (last) chemo completed!
People get tattoos to mark milestones, achievements, tribulations, remembrances. A mark or talisman they can look at, touch and remember its significance. It may conjure feelings of pride, resoluteness, determination, joy, sadness, nostalgia and other emotions.
Our Mark is the shaved patch on Kona’s forearm where the iv needle was inserted.
Each treatment required a new patch and altered from one forearm to the other. Being a dog the hair would grow back quite quickly, but I could always feel the memory of the last treatment when I smothered him with hugs. It’s a testament to how strong he truly is. The final patch is a cause for celebration and a silent prayer “please let this truly be the final time”.
Afton sports a shaved leg too, having spent 4 overnights at our emergency vet on what they call “seizure watch.” Now she also sports a shaved spot on her head from her spinal tap last week. The spinal tap and MRI show NO apparent reasons (tumors or other abnormalities) for her seizures, so we are definitely dealing with “epilepsy of unknown origin.”
Hope this is indeed Kona’s last round of chemo, and I hope he beats this horrible disease.

How is Afton doing lately? It’s so heartbreaking that she’s gone through so many tests and the conclusion is unknown…

It is heartbreaking for us, you’re right. She had a bad day a little over a week ago again. 4 seizures in one day, and another night in the hospital. No seizures since that day. Sadly, this is the way it works with epilepsy. They rule out other things, and are left with epilepsy. Afton’s seems to be a particularly tough case to control. :-(. We may try acupuncture next.
Between seizure days/episodes she is her happy, loving self.
How is Kona?
Oh, how we love our furbabies!

My heart goes out to you she sounds so sweet, it’s just not fair. Kona is good, we had his first post chemo check up and all tests came back clear, no metastasis. It’s bitter sweet because I know we have 3 months and then the dreaded tests again….

But that’s wonderful news right now! I’d give almost anything for 3 seizure free months!
